You guys should know the drill by now:
Show up to practice
Waddle through your warmup laps
Hit a team warmup
Start your workout
However, what I want to emphasize in this post is the importance of ensuring you properly warm up.
Every school/team has a warmup that is similar yet different to others (I mean there’s only so many different movements to use in a track warmup lol).
However, before you start your workout, you should always ask yourself: “Do I feel warmed up enough to give full effort towards this workout ?”
The amount of athletes that secretly know they’re not fully warmed up yet try to manage though the workout is probably around 40% of a team lol. Although it may work for some and their bodies are developed enough to stay away from injury, why wouldn't you want your body fully ready to complete your workout?
It seems pretty stupid to increase a risk of injury and not be able to give 100% during your workout just because you’re not properly warmed up (especially because it’s completely avoidable).
In order to fix that, I encourage you to hit a light stretch session before your initial team warmup. If the option is available, using a foam roller to lightly hit your lower body will prove extremely useful before your workouts (i’ll go over how to in a future post ;)).
If you do that and still want to take it a step further, you should always ask your coach for advice or more stretches to do that could help your body. They’ll appreciate the consideration and may view you higher because you’re taking the initiative to become a better athlete.
The main takeaway : There are several ways to ensure your body is properly warmed up before you start your workouts. Don’t be lazy and put yourself at risk of an injury when there are several options available to help your body be prepared.
Have any questions ?
Please put them in the comments and i’ll be sure to get back to you as soon as I can : ).
