Do you experience tightness after your workouts? Have problems of never being able to quite loosen up muscle tension in a certain place in your body? Looking for a way to improve flexibility through the relaxation of tight muscles ?
Well boy oh boy do I have great news for you, that is EXACTLY what a foam roller was designed to do. By applying pressure to a tight area of your body while slowly moving, you can substantially reduce the level of tension in those muscles.
“How does this magical device do this much for my body and how come I haven’t gotten my hands on this amazing item since the start of my athlete career?!”
I know I get it, it seems too good to be true but I promise it really does make that much of a difference.
What a foam roller does is apply tension to the fascia in your body (tightly woven connective tissue that surrounds your muscle) that helps release the built up tension you’ve acquired from your hard workout. Although it seems to easy to be true, simply reducing the tension of your muscles after your workout can provide a much smoother recovery for the following day while allowing your muscles to rebuild (it’s much easier for muscular progression if your body is happy with you after your workout compared to being tight and sore lol).
“Well that’s great and all i’m still not sure how I should roll out after my track practices”.
Great point, let me show you my foam rolling protocol to give you a better idea of what to do.
My foam rolling session:
Start with calfs (slowly roll over the different parts of your calf)
Next move to hamstrings (start apply low pressure if they’re very sore after your workout, we want to relax the muscle not beat it up lol)
Move to my quads (be sure to go slow and if comfortable enough, apply pressure to each section of your quads. They’ll be a lot tighter than you’d think lol)
Last I hit my IT bands = Side of your legs (In most cases, this area will be the most tight region. Go very slow on applying pressure while slowly rolling throughout the muscle)
I will show how I foam roll at the end of this post’s video to give a better demonstration on how to properly foam roll :).
Have any questions ?
Please put them in the comments and i’ll be sure to get back to you as soon as I can.
